i searched , saw threads, none addressed specific issue encountering.

i trying monitor memory usage using runtime.getruntime().freememory(), runtime.getruntime().maxmemory(), , runtime.getruntime().totalmemory().

on 1 run, says there 2245273792 free bytes right before declaring array, program runs out of memory , crashes when tries declare array 1104674816 bytes:

edit: how possible run out of memory when allocating less half of amount free? running out of memory bad program; there way can guarantee don't allocate more available? calling system.gc() first make amount of free/available memory more reliable? can throw sort of exception if program run out of memory, instead of having crash?

since runtime reports 2.245gig free, , reports failure when needing 1.104gig, seems logical request should succeed. when need 1.104gig, need contiguous block of memory. when contiguous block not available, jvm reports outofmemory exception.

do searches on heap fragmentation. heap fragmentation root problem.

one possible solution use nio byte buffers , allocatedirect.
memory allocated outside jvm heap space.

from javadoc:

a direct byte buffer may created invoking allocatedirect factory method of class. buffers returned method typically have higher allocation , deallocation costs non-direct buffers. contents of direct buffers may reside outside of normal garbage-collected heap, , impact upon memory footprint of application might not obvious. therefore recommended direct buffers allocated large, long-lived buffers subject underlying system's native i/o operations. in general best allocate direct buffers when yield measureable gain in program performance.
